What is Webp?
Firstly, we need to understand fully what the WebP file format is. When we upload images to use inside Webflow they are usually uploaded in .JPG file format to ensure good picture quality and file size. The file size of images in your website is important because it has an overall impact on how fast your website loads, affecting both user experience and site performance scores. WebP was created by Google as a replacement for other image file formats like .JPG .PNG and .GIF. It’s great too because it supports animation and transparency, transparency only previously being supported by .PNG file format (if you want to overlay images on top of each other with transparent backgrounds but they usually had a higher file size.) Google first announced the WebP file format in September 2010, then went on to release the first version of it in April 2018.
